What moon was there the day I was born?

we need your date, like this: 03/21/1994

The Moon is computed at universal noon of that date: it's the instant that best represents the whole day. Close to a phase change, the disc can look a hair different depending on your time zone.

the long story, for the curious

What the moon phase of your birth actually is

A moon phase is not a property of the Moon: it's an angle. It's the angular distance between the Moon and the Sun as seen from Earth. When the two sit in the same direction, the face turned toward us stays dark and we call it a new moon. When they sit in opposite directions, that same face takes the sun full on and we call it a full moon. Everything in between is the eight phases of the cycle, and which one fell to you depends on a single piece of data: your date.

That's why this calculator asks for no hour and no city. The phase advances about twelve degrees a day — slow and even — so the date is enough to draw your moon accurately. It's the only piece of your natal sky you can recover without hunting for paperwork.

    ⚗ Gold ink — science

The full cycle lasts 29.53 days — the synodic month — and this page computes it with the Meeus lunar series, the same one behind astronomical almanacs. The percentage you see is the fraction of the visible disc that was lit by the Sun: 0% at new moon, 100% at full. Checked against published ephemerides, the engine lands within a couple of minutes of the true instant of every new and full moon. (ephemerides — U.S. Naval Observatory)

The eight moons and what the tradition reads in each

The old wheel splits the cycle into eight stretches, each with its own character. The new moon is the blind beginning: nothing visible, everything still to do. The waxing crescent is the first bet, placed while the thing still promises nothing. The first quarter is the shove against resistance. The waxing gibbous is the fine adjustment, the correction before showing your work. The full moon is complete exposure, with everything good and everything uncomfortable about being seen. The waning gibbous is the phase of telling what happened. The last quarter is the pruning. And the final waning crescent is the silence before the new beginning.

    ☾ Indigo ink — legend

Reading someone's character from their birth phase is a relatively modern tradition inside astrology, popularised in the twentieth century, though it draws on a very old intuition: that starting life on a waxing moon is not the same as starting it on a waning one. We use it as a declared mirror, never as a forecast. It's legend, and we name it as such.

Why this moon gets shared so much

There's something strange and lovely about seeing the exact moon of your date drawn out: it isn't a generic sentence, it's an object. That disc up there held precisely that shape over the whole world the day you arrived — over the hospital, over the house, over the people who were waiting for you. It's the same sky your parents saw that night, if they stepped out to look.

And there's a fact everybody likes: that same moon comes back. Since the cycle lasts 29.53 days, your phase repeats thirteen times a year. The page tells you the next date on which the sky will repeat your natal moon — the anniversary nobody celebrates.

When someone asks me where to start, I tell them: with the moon of your birthday. You don't need the certificate, you don't need the city, you don't need to believe in anything. Just look. Afterwards, if something moved in you, we'll go find the rest of the sky.— the bruxo, of the apothecary

How to use your natal moon without losing your head

The reading this page gives you is a mirror, not a diagnosis and not a prophecy. It works exactly like a good question asked at the right moment: if you get a full moon and the reading talks about the balance between what you want and what the other person needs, the useful question isn't “is that true?” but “where is that happening to me right now?”. If it isn't happening, throw it away. A mirror that reflects nothing is no use, and forcing it is worse.

What the moon phase cannot tell you: how you sleep, what hour you perform, what to do with your exhaustion. That needs the whole sky of your birth crossed with what's known about rhythms, light and rest — and that is exactly the Natal Map of the Body: 26 pages computed from your exact positions, written in two inks. Quick questions about your birth moon

Does it work for any year? Yes: the engine runs from 1930 to 2026 without losing precision, and internally it reaches much further. Does it hold in the southern hemisphere? The phase is identical across the planet — what changes is the orientation: what looks lit on the right in London looks lit on the left in Sydney. The disc on this page is drawn with the northern hemisphere convention, which is what almanacs use. And if you were born right on a phase change? Then the percentage tells you more than the name does: look at the number, not the label.

    Questions that reach the apothecary

How do I know what moon phase there was on the day I was born?
The date is enough. The phase depends on the angle between the Moon and the Sun as seen from Earth, which advances about twelve degrees a day; that's why neither the hour nor the city is needed. This page computes it at universal noon of your date.
What does the percentage illuminated mean?
It's the fraction of the Moon's visible disc that was receiving sunlight: 0% at new moon, 100% at full moon. It's a measurable astronomical figure, not an interpretation.
How often does my moon phase come back?
Every 29.53 days — the synodic month — so about thirteen times a year. The calculator shows the next date on which the sky repeats your birth moon exactly.
Does the moon phase influence character?
There's no evidence for that, and we don't claim it. Reading character from the natal phase is declared twentieth-century tradition, and here it appears in indigo ink, as a mirror for personal reflection — never as science and never as a forecast.
Does the moon look the same in the southern hemisphere?
The phase and the percentage are identical everywhere on the planet; the orientation is what changes. In the southern hemisphere the lit part appears on the opposite side. The drawing on this page uses the northern hemisphere convention.
